Stumptown: Nitro Cold Brew Coffee Review

Stumptown: Nitro Cold Brew Coffee Review

About Company

Started in 1999 it started off as a Brick and Mortar store in Portland, Oregon. They are probably the most well known cold brew coffee brand in the US currently. Roasting its own coffee grinds and serving up hot brewed coffee. They started brewing cold brew commercially in March 2011. The coffee bean that they procure is from different countries around the equator. They fly to these locations and go straight to the actual farmers growing the coffee beans. They pay higher prices for the bean, although, they do not say fair trade anywhere on their website. However it is easy to see a trend with all these cold brew coffee brands that they all do fair trade. Stumptown is different because I do not see anywhere on their website that they say the coffee bean that they source is organic. They roast their own coffee beans, but no where can I find what bean the cold brew is made out of. They seem to put a lot of effort into roasting and it looks like to them is one of the most important components in making the perfect coffee. There is not much info on the actual brewing of the cold brew on their website. The only thing I gathered was that they steep it for over 12 hours and that they use a double filtration system. No other info besides that.

Tasting

A very nice dark roast fragrance when you open the can. Interesting note is that in the can at the very bottom they have the plastic thingie that releases the nitro whenever you open the can. Once you get it into your mouth you get a watery taste at the very beginning. It has no flavor just a flat neutral clean taste. It doesn’t feel any different in your mouth compared to a regular cold brew, the nitro is supposed to make it creamier with the nitrogen bubbles, but I don’t feel any difference. Then shortly after that you get the sour taste it is stronger than average. Then as you bring it toward the back of your mouth you get the coffee flavor coming out. There is no bitterness in this drink which is amazing because there is no milk or sugar. The flavor is good and strong giving you that dark roast flavor. The flavor is very clean. The body is very large it over takes your mouth and just fills your mouth with this nice flavor for quite a long time. Also the caffeine level is very high in this cold brew, it is not watered down at all. The price of this can is $4.99 for 11 ounces, which is $0.45 per ounce. This is double any price per ounce of a ready to drink cold brew.

Summary

While this Stumptown Nitro Cold Brew is a good cold brew with some great flavor, full body and zero bitterness, it is hindered by the fact that it is so expensive. You pay for the nitro but they do not deliver on it. There is no difference in mouth feel between this and any other cold brew. The nitro brings nothing to the table, which is a disappointment. My suggestion is to forego this can and just go get their Stumptown in the glass bottle, which is exactly the same as this but cheaper.
