Stumptown: Chocolate Cold Brew Coffee with Cream & Sugar Review
Started in 1999 it started off as a Brick and Mortar store in Portland, Oregon. They are probably the most well known cold brew coffee brand in the US currently. Roasting its own coffee grinds and serving up hot brewed coffee. They started brewing cold brew commercially in March 2011. The coffee bean that they procure is from different countries around the equator. They fly to these locations and go straight to the actual farmers growing the coffee beans. They pay higher prices for the bean, although, they do not say fair trade anywhere on their website. However, it is easy to see a trend with all these cold brew coffee brands that they all do fair trade. Stumptown is different because I do not see anywhere on their website that they say the coffee bean that they source is organic. They roast their own coffee beans, but nowhere can I find what bean the cold brew is made out of. They seem to put a lot of effort into roasting and it looks like to them is one of the most important components in making the perfect coffee. There is not much info on the actual brewing of the cold brew on their website. The only thing I gathered was that they steep it for over 12 hours and that they use a double filtration system. No other info besides that.
After opening the carton you get a nice although somewhat mild coffee fragrance. There is no sweet smell coming from it at all even though it says there is 32g of sugar on the back, which is only 7g less than a can of coke. Once you drink the first sip you get a very rich chocolate taste. The chocolate milk that they put in is super high quality as you can actually taste a slight bitterness of the cacao. Then as it goes into the second the bitterness mellows out and the sweet flavor of the chocolate milk, cream, and sugar is ushered in. The sweet flavor is only just a hint and isn’t very strong. Then at the very end of this, the sweetness fades out and the coffee flavor comes through finally. The coffee flavor is pretty good considering the milk and cream that is dampening it but it still is able to shine its way through. The body of the drink is slightly above average lasting for a good amount of time in your mouth. The caffeine content in this drink is very high at 340 mg. It has more caffeine than 2 cans of Rockstar. The price of this carton is $3.49 for 16 ounces, which is $0.22 per ounce.
Stumptown does it again with this cold brew coffee. It is one of the most well done flavored cold brews I have had. It doesn’t seek to cover the coffee flavor but it uses the other ingredients to enhance the coffee flavor. The taste of the cacao really highlights the very beginning of this drink and makes it a delight to drink. It is a smooth drink through and through no acidity or bitterness from the coffee. There is also an exorbitant amount of caffeine which may or may not is right, but would be a treat for caffeine junkies. This is certainly one of my top flavored cold brew coffee picks and should not pass it up.
