Califia Nitro Cold Brew Coffee: New Orleans Review

Califia Nitro Cold Brew Coffee New Orleans Review

Company

Califia Farms are best known for making drinks that are totally plant based. They are based out of California however, I see them a lot in stores in Texas. Their portfolio ranges from juices to coffee. They use direct trade- sourced coffee beans from Colombia, Guatemala and El Salvador which are used in this particular cold brew. It is also infused with nitrogen, which according to them creates an extraordinary micro foam. It is also blended with a mixture of almond milk and macadamia milk. It does come in a thick aluminum bottle and sealed with a bottle cap, which is different than the other nitros I have tested.

Taste

After doing a rigorous pour into a cup as the bottle says, the coffee gives off a weak chocolate fragrance just like the mocha version of this line of coffees. It is strange since this isn’t even the mocha flavor, it is the New Orleans flavor. After the pour, it does have a nice head in the coffee like all the nitros in this line.  The very front of this coffee has a muted bitterness that is created from the chicory. The chicory mixed with the almond milk has a taste that is reminiscent of really dark chocolate. Then as we roll to the middle part you get a more intense flavor that started in the very front. There is more of that liquid dark chocolate but more concentrated. Finally, as the drink flows into the back of the mouth you get the explosion of that dark chocolate flavor mixed in with this nice nutty flavor. Although there is no true coffee flavor in this (yet again) it does get a pass because of the chicory giving that chocolatey nutty mix that simulates a coffee flavor. If you haven’t checked out my other review on another chicory flavored cold brew click here so you can get an idea of what chicory is used and why it is used. There is slightly more body than the other Califia nitro’s that I have tried recently but it still doesn’t hit the average mark for bodies. There is no acidity in this cold brew as well. The price is $4.99 for a 10.5 oz bottle which is $0.48 per ounce

Conclusion

Finally, a cold brew from Califia that is above average. I think I have tried 6 or so at this point and this Nitro Cold Brew Coffee: New Orleans finally hits the mark. It doesn’t inherently have the coffee taste since it is covered by their “almondmilk” which is a mix of their almond milk and macadamia milk. However, where it does make up for the lack of coffee taste is their addition of chicory which was frequently used as a coffee substitute back in the day because it mimics the taste. This is a very smooth coffee with no acidity or bitterness and would be easy for both frequent and casual coffee drinkers.
