Califia Nitro Cold Brew Coffee: Mocha Review
Califia Farms are best known for making drinks that are totally plant based. They are based out of California however, I see them a lot in stores in Texas. Their portfolio ranges from juices to coffee. They use direct trade- sourced coffee beans from Colombia, Guatemala and El Salvador which are used in this particular cold brew. It is also infused with nitrogen, which according to them creates an extraordinary micro foam. It is also blended with a mixture of almond milk and macadamia milk. It does come in a thick aluminum bottle and sealed with a bottle cap, which is different than the other nitros I have tested.
After doing a rigorous pour into a cup as the bottle says, the coffee gives off a weak chocolate fragrance. It has a nice head like the other Califia nitro I tried. After the first sip, you get a very subtle sweet taste. The beginning has a very creamy taste from the almond milk that is put in. Then as you get to the middle of the mouth you get some of that chocolate taste peaking out. It isn’t however very sweet it is more cocoa than chocolate. Then as you get to the very end of the tasting you get the cocoa powder really coming out and you really get the creamy mocha taste. It tastes a bit gritty at the end from the almond milk they put in. Again there is, however, no coffee flavor at all. The body is very shallow too, for how thick this drink is and the nitro one would expect it to last in your mouth a bit, but it doesn’t. It is smooth, however, very smooth from beginning to end. This also has no bitterness or acidity at all throughout the whole drink. The price is $4.99 for a 10.5 oz bottle which is $0.48 per ounce
Again like the last nitro from Califia this mocha one is not that bad as a drink by itself. It is very very smooth, it is literally like drinking chocolate milk. Albeit a slightly grittier version of chocolate milk. This is one of the few if any Califia drinks that I can’t taste the sea salt that they put in, which is a plus. This is a COFFEE review website and by that criteria, this Califia again fails. If you are looking for something with coffee flavor stay away from this. Like the last one, I would suggest to people who are looking for a more healthier alternative to Starbucks Fraps. this drink has about 40% fewer calories and tastes just as good. Again just like last time if you want something with more caffeine and/or more coffeey flavor you should look elsewhere.
