Califia Farms are best known for making drinks that are totally plant based. They are based out of California, however, I see them a lot in stores in Texas. Their portfolio ranges from juices to coffee. They use direct trade- sourced coffee beans from Colombia, Guatemala and El Salvador which are used in this particular cold brew. It is also infused with nitrogen, which according to them creates a extraordinary micro foam. It is also blended with a mixture of almond milk and macadamia milk. It does come in a thick aluminum bottle and sealed with a bottle cap, which is different than the other nitros I have tested.
It has a nutty like smell coming off after pouring it into the glass. One thing that I would like to note that this is really the first of 3 nitros that seem to actually leave a ring around the cup as you drink. Also, there is a nice half inch layer of head that is consistently on top of the coffee as you drink. You can actually hear the foam sizzle as you drink as well. They actually did nitro correct. As you drink your first sip you get this nice creamy texture as well as some savoriness from the nutmilk as well as the sea salt that they put in. Again I am not sure why but everyone of Califia drinks that I have had so far has had sea salt. It is quite strange to me. There is none of the acidity that is usually found at the beginning. As you go into the middle of the tongue you lose some of that savoriness and you get a little more of the sweet along with the creaminess that was the beginning of the drink. Finally, when you get to the back of your tongue the creaminess of the cold brew starts to fade and you get the coffee flavor starting to come through. The creaminess never totally leaves and stays underlying the coffee flavor. The coffee flavor is very mild because it is mixed with the nutmilk. However, that being said the mixture does have a very nice taste and does work together well. The body of this drink is very light, it only stays around in your mouth for a couple seconds. Also, the caffeine is not very strong. There is also no bitterness throughout the drink. It says it has 185 mg of caffeine on the bottle, which is less than a tall cup of Starbucks drip coffee which is 260 mg of caffeine. The price is $4.99 for a 10.5 oz bottle which is $0.48 per ounce
I think that this Califia Nitro Cold Brew Coffee Latte is the 4th Califia branded cold brew I have drunk so far and I think this is the first one I have had that is actually not bad. The mix of the almond milk and macadamia milk actually pair really well with the cold brew coffee. It is only the sea salt that gets me in this drink like very other Califia drink. It makes the coffee too savory. I will say that this is the first time that I think nitro actually made a difference the drink was very smooth and you can see and hear the nitro bubbles in the drink. If you are looking for a healthier Starbucks Frappuccino alternative this would be good, but if you are looking for something more coffeey and/or caffeine this won’t be it.
